OVERVIEW OF THE VESSEL TRAFFIC SYSTEM
IN THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA

Inspecting maritime traffi c at any time (24/7) and under different conditions, enables coastal states
to participate more actively in maritime traffi c management and empowers international and national
regulations. The advancement of technology has enabled coastal states to establish better maritime
surveillance to increase maritime navigation safety and protect their own interests. One of these systems
is Vessel Traffi c System (VTS) whose purpose is to increase safety of navigation, protect the marine
environment and improve the effi ciency of maritime traffi c. Implementation of VTS system in Republic
of Croatia is carried out by the service of Vessel Traffi c Monitoring and Information System (VTMIS).
Establishment of the VTMIS service is an obligation of the Republic of Croatia in accordance with the
provisions of Directive 2002/59/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council. The paper gives
an overview of the establishment of the VTS in the Republic of Croatia and future development plans.

PRZEGLĄD SYSTEMU RUCHU STATKÓW W REPUBLICE CHORWACJI
Kontrola ruchu morskiego w dowolnym momencie (24/7) oraz w różnych warunkach umożliwia pań-
stwom nadmorskim bardziej aktywne uczestnictwo w zarządzaniu ruchem morskim i wzmacnia prze-
pisy międzynarodowe i krajowe. Postęp technologii umożliwił państwom nadmorskim ustanowienie
lepszego śledzenia morskiego w celu zwiększenia bezpieczeństwa nawigacji morskiej i ochrony swoich
własnych interesów. Jednym z tych systemów jest System Ruchu Statków (VTS), który ma na celu
zwiększenie bezpieczeństwa nawigacji, ochronę środowiska morskiego oraz poprawę sprawności ruchu
morskiego. Wdrożenie systemu VTS w Republice Chorwacji jest realizowane przez usługę Systemu
Monitorowania i Informacji Ruchu Statków (VTMIS). Ustanowienie usługi VTMIS jest obowiązkiem
Republiki Chorwacji zgodnie z zapisami Dyrektywy 2002/59/WE Parlamentu Europejskiego i Rady.
Artykuł przedstawia przegląd ustanowienia VTS w Republice Chorwacji oraz przyszłe plany rozwoju.
